Make Feedback a Win-Win!

Many people have a negative perception of feedback. You might feel like it’s personal or worry that it means you’re doing something “wrong.” At a good company, though, feedback is actually highly beneficial. Without it, you may persist with ineffective habits, lack avenues to share innovative solutions, or feel your manager isn’t invested in your success. Here are some tips for making the most of giving and receiving feedback.

Receiving Feedback

If you’re nervous or cynical about receiving feedback, you won’t have the right mindset to accept it. Slow down and take a deep breath. Focus on listening carefully to the message. If you disagree, you’ll have the opportunity to voice your concerns. But for now, take it in and analyze it. Tips to help you do this include:

  • Practice active listening skills
  • Ask clarifying questions
  • Restate what you think you heard
  • Choose a growth mindset rather than a defensive one
  • Ask for some time to consider what was said
  • If you feel something stated was erroneous, calmly explain why

Giving Feedback

Communication isn’t a one-way street. You’ll also have opportunities at work to provide feedback of your own. Giving constructive feedback isn’t as easy as it sounds, though. Here are some tips to be a more effective communicator:

  • Lead with something positive
  • Be direct and specific
  • Keep it work-focused, avoiding personal judgments or attacks
  • Empathize with the person you’re speaking to
  • Provide actionable suggestions for new outcomes
  • Give the person time to process the feedback rather than demanding an answer right away

Feedback at work can be scary. But with a slight mindset change and a solid plan, you can give and receive it more effectively. And the rewards, from increasing productivity to building more solid work relationships, are well worth the effort.
