Be Visible

One of the biggest challenges in remote engineering is figuring out how to get noticed by your boss. When you’re in the office, it’s easy. But at home, you must take proactive steps to remain visible. One of the best ways to do this is through frequent communication. When you get a message or email, respond as quickly as possible. Proactively update your leadership team with regular status reports on your projects. If a challenge arises, send the boss a heads-up and suggestions to fix the issue.

Limit Distractions

Working from home means finding a way to cope with the distractions of daily life. Set up a home office with a door that closes and locks. Keep the cat off your desk. Let your family know when your work hours are, and ask not to be disturbed. If necessary, use noise-canceling headphones or earplugs to keep yourself focused.

Create Work-Life Balance

A remote engineering role means no physical separation between home and work. You’ll need to find ways to create that separation, or you may start to feel like you are always on call. Develop a schedule that allows you to fully concentrate when you are on the clock and fully relax after hours. At the end of the workday, shut down your computer and turn off notifications on your phone.

Communicate

When you’re in the office, water cooler chat comes naturally. But remote engineering can feel incredibly isolating. Make an effort to reach out to your teammates and supervisors. If your team’s work platform has an Off Topic section, spend some time there.

Batch Tasks

Whenever possible, group similar tasks. If you need to hold three meetings, try to schedule them back-to-back. If you’re writing project reports, write a few at once. This lets you move more cleanly throughout your day without losing focus.
