Contract Positions vs Permanent Placement: Which is Better for My IT Career?

Whether you’re an IT professional who is newly out of college or simply looking for a change, you might wonder whether it’s better to take contract work or seek a permanent placement. Both options have their own pros and cons, depending on your short-term and long-term goals. Here’s what you should know.

Contract Work

If you’re looking for something fast, contract work may be your best option. Many employers are reluctant to bring on too many full-time employees due to ongoing uncertainty as we emerge from the pandemic, so they’re relying on temporary workers to fill in the gaps. They may also hire contract workers to meet urgent deadlines. In addition, you won’t need to go through the process of locating job postings, sending off resumes, participating in multiple rounds of interviews, and then onboarding. A staffing agency can match you with an existing position that meets your needs, and you may be able to start work in days instead of weeks or months.

Contract work is also an excellent way to gain experience while checking out different aspects of the IT industry. Since contract workers are only hired for a short period of time, you can take a series of different jobs without worrying about the effects on your resume. This can be especially valuable if you don’t have prior experience in the field or are trying to make a radical change.

Permanent Placement

A permanent placement may be a better option if you need a steady paycheck and a predictable schedule. This is the type of full-time job you could get by reading job boards and sending out resumes. But it may still make sense to go through a staffing agency. You won’t have to seek out positions on your own. The agency can help you tailor your resume to the company and even brush up on your interview skills. And your recruiter will be there for you as you go through the process of interviewing and onboarding.

The Third Option: Temp-to-Hire

Some IT professionals prefer a different option: temp-to-hire, sometimes known as contract-to-direct. In this model, you’re hired on a contract basis. But if things work out, you may be offered a full-time position with the company. This allows you to try out the job and get to know the company. Then you can decide whether it’s the right fit. If not, you can simply walk away without damaging your resume or your reputation.
