Signs It’s Time to Find a New Job

We have all had fleeting thoughts of quitting our jobs now and then, but there are times when that feeling keeps nagging at you to the point that you wonder whether it’s finally time to make a move.

Here are signs that it’s definitely time to start looking for a new job.

You Are Unhappy Most Every Day

If you have felt unhappy at work every day for an extended period of time, then it’s a clear sign you need to move on, especially if you’ve tried everything you can think of to reignite the passion for your work. While no job is a picnic every single day, no job should make you completely miserable every single day, either.

Your Work Environment is Toxic

Jobs aren’t just about work. Your level of satisfaction has everything to do with the environment you work in. and if that environment is toxic, you cannot feel happy and you cannot put forth your best and most productive effort. If your boss is a nightmare, if office politics make it impossible to trust anyone, or if your colleagues are completely miserable, it’s time to start looking for a new job.

You Aren’t Doing the Job You Were Hired to Do

While job duties and roles naturally evolve with time, some change can be stifling. If you are not using your skills, if you are not being utilized based on your expertise of if your job has changed so much you barely recognize it (and don’t like it), it’s probably a good idea to move on.

You Aren’t Growing In Your Career

As an engineer, you probably want to grow your career over time. No one wants to remain stagnant forever, so if you have goals of developing as a professional and your workplace isn’t supporting that or providing opportunities to grow, it’s time to find a company that will.

Turnover Is Getting High

If it suddenly seems like you’re attending a last-day luncheon or happy hour every week and you keep hearing colleagues talking about updating their resumes, it’s not a good sign. High turnover often signals a cultural issue, but even if you are content with the culture, it’s difficult to work when your team members are constantly changing. If everyone else is hitting the road, it’s a good sign you should, too.

Leadership Keeps Changing

If a company is constantly reorganizing and moving management around, it typically means the company lacks direction.  Reorganizations shouldn’t be regular occurrences or even semi-regular occurrences because they create a great deal of confusion and make it difficult for employees to understand exactly where the company is going.
