The Best States for Civil Engineers to Work

America was built by civil engineers. Roads, bridges, airports, buildings, sewer systems – all of these critical infrastructure projects and more are only possible because of the work of civil engineers. While civil engineers are needed in every city in the country, there are some markets that offer much more opportunity than others. Here are some of the best places for civil engineers to work, according to ASCE’s Civil Engineering Salary Report.

New York

Salaries vary across the state, but New York City is a booming market for civil engineers. The average engineer brings in around $134,149. The Five Boroughs are home to the nation’s largest subway system, tallest buildings, most famous bridges and some of the most heavily traveled roads in the country. There is ample opportunity for civil engineers to be part of exciting and important projects – and earn a great living.

District of Columbia

While not officially a state, Washington, DC is a great place for civil engineers to put down roots. The average salary in DC for civil engineers is $134,074. The nation’s capital hosts 22 million visitors per year to view landmarks and take historical tours. The District is making heavy investments in new infrastructure projects to provide tourists from around the world an even better experience.

Illinois

Chicago, America’s “Second City,” is known for its extensive green spaces and is often referred to as a city in a garden. Chicago is devoted to keeping its infrastructure friendly to cars, trains, buses, bicycles and foot traffic. They recently unveiled a series of billion-dollar green projects to continue to improve infrastructure, and the average civil engineer currently makes $131,162 per year.

Washington

Seattle and Portland are synonymous with the Pacific Northwest, and a booming population has led to significant investments in infrastructure to support that growth as well as the millions of tourists who visit each year. Washington boasts a unique mix of urban areas surrounded by mountainous landscapes and waterways. The state is known for its commitment to being and staying green, and Seattle is heavily invested in developing pedestrian and bicycle-friendly roadways as well as light rail extension projects.
